Welcome to the Official Website of The Brothers Forbes

The Brothers Forbes Stereofame Music has been a major part of Darren Forbes' life from the time he could open up his mouth and sing. The instrument playing came later followed by the song writing. Darren's music is a simple mix of Celtic Folk, Modern Folk, and Folk Blues sounds. His sound and vocal style are his own but not without the influence of many great musicians along the way both famous and undiscovered.

Darren's songs come from the heart and always express an aspect of personal or shared truth. The lyrics are the soul of the music. The melody simply sets the mood for the words. Darren makes music as a creative journey he can share with others. It is not for fame, respect, or popularity.

Darren and his brother, Todd have been playing music since their youth. Two brother, two best friends, a guitar player and a bass player. A simple acoustic arrangement to express a love for music. The Brothers Forbes.

Title:The Brothers Forbes
Date:Nov 2nd, 2008
Rantings:

The Brothers Forbes will once again supporting the Meadow Lake Arts and Culture Society this year at their artists' showcase.  We are slotted to play for a half hour at around 8:00 I believe.  If it is anything like last year the time will be flexible and people will play until their set is done.

I was thinking about what songs would make a good first CD (a real cd).  Right now I have quite  few finished songs that can be played with little preparation.  In fact, I just wrote and composed another one tonight called My Friend.  Inspired by true events I guess you could say.

The song list I have right now includes:

  1. Across the Universe
  2. Better Days
  3. Not Alone
  4. Tired
  5. Affliction
  6. Nothing’s easy
  7. The Loss of Hope
  8. Your Heaven
  9. Let you Go
  10. My friend
  11. Break Me
  12. Memory of the Past
  13. Through the Dark

  1. When I am Gone
  2. Never Going to Leave
  3. Feel the Storm
  4. The Journey
  5. Still Standing
  6. You are the One
  7. Willow
  8. All that is Best
  9. The Only One I Have
  10. Up to You
  11. Words
  12. My Father
  1. When is it Safe?
  2. Selfish
  3. Arrhythmic
  4. Upon my Knees
  5. Apologies
  6. Dreaming
  7. Robbing my Life
  8. Night of Silence
  9. Anyone Here
  10. Observation
  11. My Justice
  12. Our Time

I think Todd and I will be focusing on getting some of these songs recorded.  I have been thinking a lot and doing research into having the songs mastered before selling another bunch of demo CD's.  I am hoping with the new Presonus interface I got that the recording mix will be much better than past efforts and plenty good enough to receie mastering to create consistency across a CD.

Title:TGIF a success
Date:October 24th, 2008
Rantings:

The Brothers Forbes The TGIF on Friday was a great success.  Considering that I am still battling a cold the sets went off without a hitch.  Todd played his new Epiphone Viola Bass for the show and it had a sweet tone.  I played my Garrison since it is the only choice!

We played 15 songs for the regular sets and then I did a solo encore for three songs.  Then my voice was done.

Thanks again to the organizer Trudy Graham and the MC Kyle Halsted for having The Brothers Forbes back again this year for the TGIF.

Title:Oct 24th, TGIF
Date:Oct 15th, 2008
Rantings:

It looks like the Brothers Forbes will be playing the TGIF coffee house at the Alliance on October 24th.  I assume it will start at around 7:30 p.m.  I also assume tickets are $5.00

It should be alot of fun.  Todd and I have been polishing up the two sets we will be playing.  We have some of my new songs to introduce for the first time as well.  Of course there will be some of the tried and true songs but I am excited to play some of the new material I have been working on over the last few months.

As an aside, the "Look" section is finally up and running.  Have a look...I tweaked some free flash code out there to fit with the page.  Nice addition.  Actually the company that designed the flash offers a few really cool apps for web pages.  The only thing is you have to have some coding knowledge to customie to your liking.

Words that Matter

The Road not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

Words to live by

"Most of us are rich with the things of society. What society has created in us and what we have created in ourselves, are greed, envy, anger, hate, jealousy, anxiety - and with all these we are very rich.

The various religions throughout the world have preached poverty. The monk assumes a robe, changes his name, shaves his head, enters a cell and takes a vow of poverty and chastity; in the East he has one loin cloth, one robe, one meal a day - and we all respect such poverty. But those men who have assumed the robe of poverty are still inwardly, psychologically, rich with the things of society because they are still seeking position and prestige; they belong to this order or that order, this religion or that religion; they still live in the divisions of a culture, a tradition"
